Un mecanismo basado en tareas y reglas para la creación de sistemas hipermedia adaptativos: aplicación a la educación a través de Internet.

Prácticamente desde sus comienzos, tanto Internet como los servicios asociados a la World Wide Web (WWW) han sido ampliamente utilizados para la distribución de información y para la enseñanza a distancia. La información publicada en la Web puede ser consultada con independencia del lugar y momento en que se realice el acceso, y sin necesidad de disponer de herramientas especiales, ya que basta con utilizar un navegador estándar. 

Estas características hacen de Internet una plataforma adecuada para la difusión de información y para la educación a distancia, pero no garantizan la efectividad de estos procesos, que van más allá de la mera navegación entre distintas páginas estáticas y la lectura de la información mostrada en ellas. Los usuarios que acceden a un sistema hipermedia pueden tener distintas preferencias o intereses. En el ámbito educativo, no todos los estudiantes tienen la misma facilidad para comprender los temas objeto de estudio, y los conocimientos previos sobre dichos temas pueden variar de unos a otros, por lo que las explicaciones necesarias para que todos ellos asimilen unos conceptos determinados pueden variar en cada caso particular. Además, existen otras diferencias relacionadas con características personales como su edad, intereses, preferencias, etc. que pueden influir en el proceso de aprendizaje de los estudiantes. Por otra parte, también deben considerarse las acciones realizadas durante su interacción con el sistema para adaptar los contenidos mostrados teniendo en cuenta el comportamiento de cada estudiante en particular.

Por tanto, existe una necesidad de mecanismos que permitan incluir en los sistemas hipermedia la posibilidad de modificar las opciones de navegación disponibles y los contenidos presentados a los usuarios mediante algún tipo de adaptación, de modo que cada usuario pueda ser guiado para conseguir mejor sus objetivos. Existen diversas técnicas y métodos para la creación de sistemas hipermedia adaptativos. Entre las limitaciones que presentan algunas de las implementaciones de estas técnicas se incluyen la de estar restringidas a ciertas áreas de aplicación, considerar únicamente algunos aspectos que pueden influir en el proceso de adaptación o ser difíciles de utilizar por los creadores de estos sistemas, entre otras.

En este trabajo se presenta una nueva aproximación a la descripción y construcción de sistemas hipermedia adaptativos basados en la Web que permite implementar la mayoría de los métodos y técnicas existentes y que puede ser utilizada en cualquier área de aplicación. La autora propone un mecanismo para la generación de estos sistemas basado en la separación entre la estructura y los contenidos que aparecen en los mismos. Este mecanismo se fundamenta en un formalismo que utiliza tareas y reglas para la descripción de los sistemas, que también es presentado en esta memoria. 

La utilización del mecanismo propuesto facilita el diseño y creación de sistemas hipermedia que pueden ser adaptados a cualquier característica de los usuarios que se considere relevante. Esta adaptación puede realizarse mediante la modificación de la estructura del sitio Web y la generación de las páginas de contenidos más apropiadas para cada usuario. También presenta la ventaja de facilitar la reutilización de componentes y el mantenimiento de los sistemas hipermedia generados, entre otras. 

Este mecanismo ha sido implementado en el sistema TANGOW y se han realizado diversas experiencias que muestran la sencillez del formalismo propuesto para describir sistemas hipermedia adaptativos y la utilidad del mecanismo para la generación de dichos sistemas.
