DOCTORAL THESIS (presented in June 2001)
Title:
Un mecanismo basado en tareas y reglas para la creación de sistemas hipermedia adaptativos: aplicación a la educación a través de Internet.
Title translation:
A mechanism based on teaching tasks and rules for the development of adaptive hypermedia systems: application to Web-based education.

Abstract

The World Wide Web (WWW) has been the best technology for distributing information since it was born. It has been used for teaching and learning. But the information acquisition and the learning process are more complex than navigating between different static pages and reading them. There is a need for mechanisms that modify the navigation alternatives and the information presented by some sort of adaptation, so that the users can be guided to achieve better their learning goals.
Not all users have the same preferences or interests when accessing a Web site. In relation to educational Web sites, not all students have the same skills for learning a concrete subject. Some of them need more explanations than others, and they may have previous knowledge about the subject or not. There are other differences among students related to personal features such as age, interests, preferences, etc. which are important too. Moreover, the results of each student's work during the learning session must be taken into account in order to adapt the next piece of contents to be presented to the student.
There exist different techniques and methods intended to incorporate adaptability into hypermedia systems but they have limitations such as being subject-dependant, considering only some aspects of the users that can influence the adaptation process, being not very easy to implement or include in the hypermedia systems by non-experts, among others.
This thesis describes an approach to the description and construction of adaptive Web-based systems that has the main advantages of some of the existing methods and techniques and can be applied to more general settings that a specific application area. The author proposes a mechanism for adaptive hypermedia generation that is based on a description formalism also presented in this work, which makes use of tasks and rules for describing the hypermedia system. These facilitate the design and creation of Web-based systems that can be adapted to any characteristic considered as relevant for the adaptation of both the Web-site structure and the contents presented. This mechanism also has the advantage of facilitating the reuse of components and the maintenance of the generated systems, among others.
The proposed mechanism has been implemented in the TANGOW system and some experiences have taken place showing the easiness of the formalism to describe adaptive hypermedia systems and the utility of the mechanism for the system generation.
