Planning
and Execution for Rover Missions
Maria Dolores Rodriguez-Moreno
NASA Ames Research Center
Abstract
The increased number of planetary science missions requires more
capable on-board software. Not only must individual modules
be more robust, but there also must be a
substantial increase in the ability to coordinate these modules, and
increased reusability for future missions. Agents within the control
system will all use the same execution machinery, both semantics and
implementation, with a single communication protocol.
This architecture, called Intelligent Distributed Execution
Architecture (IDEA), reduces the gap between traditional real-time
control software and high-level, search-based autonomy, thereby
simplifying design, integration, and validation of model-based
autonomous explorers.

Dra. Maria Dolores
Rodriguez-Moreno received an European PhD in Computer Sciences in
2004 by the Universidad de Alcala.
Her research interests are in the area of Planning, Scheduling,
Monitoring and Execution applied to real domains as satellites,
workflow or e-Learning. She perfomed her predoctoral research at
British Telecom Adastral Park in Ipswich (UK) and CNR in Rome (Italy).
Since November 2005, she has been doing postdoctoral research at NASA
Ames Research Center in Mountain View, CA (USA).
